The kindness cut: how you can donate your locks to CANSA

With October being Women’s Health Awareness month, we are seeing pink ribbons for breast cancer awareness everywhere. The C – word is not something we wish upon any other person, and yet many of us have lost friends and family to this dreaded disease.

Having to go through chemotherapy is a very, to put it mildly, challenging part of cancer treatment. Then you have to deal with the side effects that sometimes come with the treatment. Hair loss is one of those side effects and can happen to individuals who are on chemotherapy. The drugs kill the cancer cells, but also damage the hair follicles. This can then cause the hair to fall out during treatment.

What can family, friends and any one of us do to help? CANSA has come up with a way to make it easy for you to help cancer patients with hair loss. The Kindness cut campaign, where human hair is used to make wigs, and the wigs are then given to cancer patients for free.

The best reasons why you should donate

Hair, especially for a woman is a sign of beauty, our crowning glory. Having to watch it fall out must be extremely difficult and devastating. Providing this opportunity for cancer patients to receive a wig, offers the person a sense of self-confidence again. It will help to restore their dignity and just make them feel beautiful again. Bring a smile to their faces.

The important thing to remember is that you have the ability to help somebody in need, why not take the step to do it. You don’t have to worry, in the end your hair will grow back. So are going to take the plunge and donate your hair?

Donating money to the campaign: The kindness cut

Are you inspired to help, but not quite ready to cut your hair? Anybody can help out by making a simple donation to the campaign. The money needed to make one wig can cost almost R2000, so any financial contribution would be most welcome. You can visit the campaign page at, (https://www.givengain.com/cause/1056/campaigns/10537/). Don’t forget to share this page on all of your social media platforms with your friends to increase awareness of the campaign. Want to be even more involved, you can even start your own campaign to raise money for this cause.

Donating your hair to CANSA

Do you have long hair? Would you like to donate your ponytail to CANSA?

It is simple to donate your hair, just visit your local CANSA care centre, which can be found countrywide. (http://www.cansa.org.za/donating-human-hair-to-make-wigs-availability-of-wigs/ )

You would have heard of the Shavathons that usually happen every year at selected shopping centres throughout the country. The function allows you to easily donate your hair to support cancer patients who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy treatment. As it takes about 6 to even 10 ponytails of hair to make one wig, every donation is appreciated.

All the donated hair is collected and sent off to a wig manufacturer to create the wigs. The wigs are then distributed to the CANSA Care Centres found countrywide, and these are then given to those who are in need.

What are the requirements of donating your hair?

To make sure the hair is in its best condition, there are a few simple things to take note of if you do decide to donate.

  •  Ponytails that are to be donated should be at least 25 cm in length
  •  Your hair should be dry and clean when you go to cut it
  •  Hair that has been treated or dyed is also accepted. Unfortunately no dreadlocks can be used.
  •  Make sure to secure both ends of the hair with an elastic and place into a plastic bag, this will ensure your hair remains in good condition.
