Is Laser Hair Removal for You?
Category : Beauty
There are quite a few options available to both women and men when it comes to hair removal. The most common way would be to use a shaver, of which there is a variety. From normal blade shavers to the more modern electric shavers.
Others prefer to wax in order to remove their hair, which lasts longer than using a blade. But there is another option, laser hair removal.
What is laser hair removal
Are you tired of shaving and waxing all the time, looking for something more permanent? Well, laser hair removal might be for you. This method can be used on the legs, arms, back, bikini area, the underarms as well as the face area.
The word permanent hair removal is also misleading in some advertisements, as the procedure doesn’t actually completely remove everything. It does reduce the hair by about 70% but does not permanently remove it altogether. Even though there is a percentage that grows back, this hair is a lot finer and can barely be seen. If you are looking for something more permanent, then you might consider Electrolysis instead.
The procedure works best on people with lighter skin and who have dark hair. Using the correct laser, those with darker skin can also benefit. Which is why you should speak to a professional before commencing. If done incorrectly, the treatment can cause some discolouration for those with darker skin. The actual treatment involves using an infra-red light that focuses on the hair follicle.
What to expect from a laser hair removal session
There are a few things you need to be aware of before you go for treatments. You should not pluck, wax or in any way remove the hair at least two weeks beforehand. Since the laser treatment aims to remove the hair by the root, waxing will leave nothing for the laser to focus on. You can, however, shave before you go in for laser hair treatment.
Your skin will be quite sensitive after the sessions, so it is advised to avoid things like sunbeds, staying in the sun for long periods, or products that might cause irritation or clog pores.

Is laser hair removal painful?
There can be mild discomfort and a feeling of warmth or heat. Some have described it as being like an elastic band being snapped onto the skin. This sensation is caused by the concentrated light, which is targeting the hair follicles.
If done correctly there should be few if any side-effects. The worst sensation you could feel is similar to minor sunburn and this should pass quickly.
How many laser hair removal treatments do you need?
This all depends on what your hair growth cycle is like and the size of the area you are treating. A significant reduction could take about six up to nine treatments, which must be spaced out over a few weeks in-between sessions. There are those who are lucky enough o get away with only four treatment sessions. Results, however, are noticeable after the very first session. Each session is also quite fast depending on the area being treated. So you can easily pop in and out during a workday.
Cost of laser hair removal
The cost of laser hair removal is a bit more than waxing or shaving but in the long run, it should be worth it. You will have no more worries when it comes to lifting up your arms in the gym or wearing that bikini to the beach. The price varies from place to place but on average can cost over R2000, depending on the area you want to take care of.
