What is a hair mask?
The first question is fairly simple, what is a hair mask? Well, you can think of a hair mask as being a type of enhanced conditioner. A hair mask provides a little more than your average hair conditioner. The main benefits include extra moisture and nourishment for your hair. This is especially helpful for those who have damaged or dry hair. A hair mask is usually heavier, meaning it is made up of moisturising butter like shea or coconut. You can also have heavier oils like avocado or Argan oil added in for extra benefit.
Who should use a Hair Mask
A lot of women put their hair through a fair amount of stress, from colouring to heat styling and even being exposed to harsh environments. All of this can cause some hair damage, which is where a hair mask comes into play. Masks are especially good for those who have dry, damaged or frizzy hair. If you are someone who has oily hair, it might be best to avoid hair masks or to find one for your specific hair type.

How to apply your hair mask
Begin by first shampooing your hair, as normal, rinse and apply the hair mask. You will need to leave your hair mask in, for at least a few minutes, in order to get the most benefit. All of the good oils and nourishing ingredients have to properly sink in. After 10 to 15 minutes, you can then rinse your hair out. Leave the conditioner out when using your hair mask. You should only use a hair mask about once a week, or if you have really damaged hair, twice a week. Also, when applying your hair mask, you only need to use a small amount. A little bit does go a long way.
Some hair masks can also be applied to dry hair and then left in for about 20 minutes. This is great for those who have really dry hair, it’s something you can think about doing on those lazy days you don’t have a lot to do. You could also apply the mask before you go to bed, just wrap your hair in a towel, shower cap or scarf, so as not to mess up your pillow.
You can then shampoo and rinse out the following morning. When applying a hair mask to wet hair, try to use a wide tooth comb, this helps to distribute the mask evenly over all of your hair, from your scalp to the tips of your hair. The tips or ends of the hair is the area where the most damage can occur, so give a little more attention here.
